EMFACE® for TMJ & Jaw Muscle Dysfunction

Supported by Clinical Evaluation

Jaw pain, clenching, grinding, and limited jaw movement are often associated with muscle dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). EMFACE® Functional is a non-invasive, needle-free treatment designed to address muscle-based TMJ symptoms through neuromuscular stimulation and controlled thermal energy.
Clinical evaluation has demonstrated that EMFACE may help improve jaw comfort, mobility, and daily function in patients with TMJ-related muscle tension

Understanding Muscle-Based TMJ

Many TMJ symptoms are related to overactivity, imbalance, or fatigue of the muscles involved in mastication, rather than structural joint pathology. These symptoms may include:
When TMJ symptoms are primarily muscular, EMFACE may be used as a supportive dental therapy.

How EMFACE Works for TMJ

EMFACE Functional uses Ultra-Low Frequency HIFES™ (High-Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation) synchronized with radiofrequency (RF) to stimulate and retrain facial muscles involved in jaw movement.
In a clinical evaluation of 25 dental patients (ages 23–77) who received four 20-minute EMFACE treatments, the following outcomes were reported
Additionally, improvements in mandibular range of motion (ROM) were observed, including a documented 10 mm increase in maximal mouth opening in a patient with TMJ-related pain, with sustained improvement at one-month follow-up

Ideal Dental Candidates

EMFACE may be appropriate for patients who:
EMFACE does not replace occlusal therapy, orthodontics, or treatment of structural TMJ disorders, but may be incorporated into a comprehensive dental TMJ care plan.

Treatment Protocol

Patients typically experience rhythmic muscle contractions and gentle warmth during treatment.

EMFACE as Part of Dental TMJ Management

EMFACE may be used alongside:
Your dentist will determine if EMFACE is appropriate based on clinical findings and patient symptoms.

Schedule a TMJ Evaluation

If jaw tension, clenching, or pain is affecting your comfort or oral health, schedule a dental consultation to determine whether EMFACE Functional may be a beneficial addition to your TMJ treatment plan.

Clinical Results: EMFACE® for TMJ

EMFACE Functional™ has been clinically evaluated in dental patients with muscle-based TMJ dysfunction, demonstrating improvements in jaw relaxation, mobility, and daily oral function.

Key Clinical Findings¹

Functional Improvement Observed

Clinical assessment included validated measures such as the TMD Disability Index and mandibular range of motion (ROM). In one documented case, a patient experienced a 10 mm increase in maximal mouth opening, with resolution of pain and sustained improvement at one-month follow-up¹.

Treatment Protocol Studied

These preliminary results support EMFACE as a safe, non-invasive adjunct therapy for patients experiencing muscle-related TMJ symptoms.
