EMFACE® for TMJ & Jaw Muscle Dysfunction

Jaw pain, clenching, grinding, and limited jaw movement are often associated with muscle dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Understanding Muscle-Based TMJ 

Many TMJ symptoms are related to overactivity, imbalance, or fatigue of the muscles involved in mastication, rather than structural joint pathology. These symptoms may include:
  • Jaw tightness or soreness 
  • Clenching or grinding (bruxism) 
  • Pain during chewing or speaking 
  • Limited mouth opening 
  • Facial muscle fatigue or tension-related headaches 
When TMJ symptoms are primarily muscular, EMFACE may be used as a supportive dental therapy.

How EMFACE Works for TMJ 

EMFACE Functional uses Ultra-Low Frequency HIFES™ (High-Intensity Facial Electrical Stimulation) synchronized with radiofrequency (RF) to stimulate and retrain facial muscles involved in jaw movement.
In a clinical evaluation of 25 dental patients (ages 23–77) who received four 20-minute EMFACE treatments, the following outcomes were reported 
  • 100% of patients reported improved jaw relaxation 
  • 95% reported improved jaw mobility 
  • 91% reported reduced pain during eating and chewing 
  • 89% improvement in ability to perform daily oral activities, such as brushing and flossing 
  • No adverse events reported 
Additionally, improvements in mandibular range of motion (ROM) were observed, including a documented 10 mm increase in maximal mouth opening in a patient with TMJ-related pain, with sustained improvement at one-month follow-up 

Ideal Dental Candidates 

EMFACE may be appropriate for patients who: 
  • Clench or grind their teeth 
  • Experience muscle-related TMJ discomfort 
  • Have jaw stiffness or limited range of motion Report pain with chewing or jaw fatigue 
  • Are using or considering occlusal splints or night guards 
EMFACE does not replace occlusal therapy, orthodontics, or treatment of structural TMJ disorders, but may be incorporated into a comprehensive dental TMJ care plan.

Treatment Protocol

  • Four treatments total 

  • Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes 
  • Treatments are spaced several days to one week apart 
  • No anesthesia or downtime required 
Patients typically experience rhythmic muscle contractions and gentle warmth during treatment.

Clinical Results: EMFACE® for TMJ 

EMFACE Functional™ has been clinically evaluated in dental patients with muscle-based TMJ dysfunction, demonstrating improvements in jaw relaxation, mobility, and daily oral function.
